Evoke

Director, Editor, Producer, VFX

Synopsis

Two dormant figures come alive, moving together with the urgency of a fleeting moment. A collaboration between LA-based dance duo Whyteberg, director Alexander Gabrielli and producer Christa Boarini, “Evoke” combines contemporary modern dance with a heightened visual aesthetic, exploring our instinctual need for communication and intimacy.

Process

“Evoke” has always been about collaboration. The goal was to explore the intimacy of movement within a non-traditional space. With that in mind, my producer Christa Boarini and I partnered up with talented individuals in different fields, allowing them each artistic liberties to make the piece their own.

The first step was to find the right dancers. I came across Whyteberg when I took their modern dance class in Downtown LA and I was immediately drawn to the way Laura and Gracie moved together. We approached them with the idea, letting them know that we’d want their input throughout the production: this would be as much their piece as ours.

Once the choreography was established it wasn’t hard to find other people eager to participate in something where they would get a chance to play and help create something beautiful. Over the next 3 months we watched a phrase of choreography develop and transform into a truly evocative experience on screen. One by one the elements came into place: costumes, wardrobe, hair, camera, lighting, and finally an original score by the up-and-coming band, Slow Meadow.

For me, the process was equally as rewarding as the final product. None of this would have been possible without the enthusiasm and creativity of so many amazing artists who took an idea and ran with it.
